Quota protests in Gujarat lead to doctors, police scuffle.

Ahmedabad, May 30 (PTI) Hindu News: Hundreds of doctors and medical students today took out a huge anti-quota rally here and blocked traffic, leading to a scuffle between the protestors and police.

Slogan-shouting agitators, carrying banners and placards, took out a rally on the Ashram road and blocked traffic at the Income Tax circle, police said.

As police tried to remove them, a scuffle broke out, they said. The blockade was removed, allowing smooth flow of traffic, they added.

A student of B J Medical College said, "police pushed some of the agitating students and doctors and one of them also hit us with sticks. Following this, a scuffle broke out between us and the police. However, they later apologised for their action."

The rally was organised under the banner of the Ahmedabad Medical Association.
Meanwhile, about 5000 private clinics and hospitals in the city have called for a 'medical bandh' today to extend support to the striking medicos. Ahmedabad Dental Association has also extended their support to the bandh.

Also, the 26 students of B J Medical College continued with their strike as the anti-quota stir entered the 16th day in the State today.
Meanwhile, members of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Gujarat Chemist Assocition, and Naroda and Narol Business Association , have extended their support to the striking medicos.

Naroda and Narol Businessmen's Assocation has observed bandh in their areas today in support of the striking medicos.

Mrugesh Buch of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry said all the members of the GCCI have unanimously decided at a meeting held on Saturday, to support the striking medicos.

"Strike cannot bring soultion to the reservation problem, but we have to fight in some way to make the government understand that this step would prove to be divisive for the country," he said in a reply to a question on Supreme Court directirve to medicos to end strike in interest of the patients.

A student of B J Medical College said they would act as per the direction of their counterparts in Delhi.

Meanwhile, the State Government has made alternate arrangements to run the government and Ahmedabad Municipal Corproation-run hospitals in the city.
About 70 medical officers, working under the state government have been deployed in various hospitals, while emergency services and OPDs in the City Civil Hospital were functioning.

May 30, 2006 : AMA (Ahmedabad Medical Association) has called a Medical Bandh on 30st Mayin support of Youth for Equality. All private practioners and Nursing homes will remain closed. However the casualty and emergency services will remain open.

The striking doctors will also take out rally from N.H.L Medical College to Income-tax.

Demands:
1. Scrapping off the proposed reservation policy

2. Revising the existing the reservation policy

3. Reservation if at all needed should be on the basis of Socio-Economic status and not on the basis of caste

4. Reservation benefits should be given to only one person from each generation.

5. If not, reservation benefits should be used only once in the lifetime, i.e. at HSC level or UG level.

In the wake of the 93rd amendment to the constitution of India, it is now possible for the Central and State governments to enforce up to 49.5% reservation in public and private colleges across the country.

On April 28th, 2006 the Congress-led Democratic Front government in Maharashtra has quietly approved a draft ordinance that will bring in a staggering 50% reservation in private professional institutions. It is only a matter of time before similar quotas are ENFORCED in colleges across the country and the corporate sector.As members of the student community and the corporate sector a 49.5% quota has grave ramifications. Reservation undermines MERIT.

In a nation where premier institutes have a 1% acceptance rate, a 49.5% quota will DENY meritorious candidates admission. Are we willing to sacrifice the aspirations of lakhs of students at the altar of what is nothing more than vote bank politics?

The Government of India is pursuing a policy of blatant appeasement that needs to be checked.

It is time for PROACTIVE ACTION. We as the youth of India owe it to ourselves and more importantly this nation to make our voice heard. India is a democracy. It is only through a united front that we can bring about the change that the times demand.

Students from colleges across the country have decided to hold a nation-wide protest against the 93rd amendment.

All those who oppose this move of the government are requested to show solidarity with these students. The protest will be apolitical and non-violent. Details will be forwarded to you soon.
